Mayfield

Although Mayfield seems to have been an institution in Terenure for ever, it opened only in 2010 in a former butcher’s shop. Now the main part of it occupies a former abattoir. A promotion of sorts, I suppose.

From being a prime location for banks, estate agents and hairdressers before what I saw termed recently as ‘The Great Recession’, Terenure is now pretty crammed with cafes and restaurants. It’s a competitive space but I think Mayfield benefits from being located at the north end of the village, closer to the Brighton Square and Eaton Square areas where disposable income has never been an issue.

Mayfield has a sort of bohemian vibe with its plant-rich al fresco dining area …

… mismatched furniture, and old-style living room ambience.

You enter through a shop carrying attractive crockery, expensive toiletries, candles and a good selection of LGBT+ -friendly greetings cards.

We (Christine, Eileen and I) arrived at about 11.30am on Sunday and were led to our table at the top end of the main dining area. Coffees ordered, we looked at the menu.

It’s limited, but in a good way, with choices for the hungry and the not so. Eileen and Christine ordered Eggs Royale and I ordered the Mayfield Hash, mainly because I was curious and because it contained black pudding, which I find hard to resist.

We were engrossed in chat so I didn’t really do my customary table and chair count but it’s sizeable enough. Throughout our time there, it filled pretty much to capacity. It seems to be a place where couples and groups of friends come for brunch, unlike Foam at the other end of the village in which children are a feature.

Coffees arrived. They were fine and they remembered the special request for one very hot coffee.

Our breakfast dishes weren’t far behind.

The Eggs Royale …

Not sure about the messy arrangement of unadorned leaves but there were, as you can see, generous helpings of smoked salmon and hollandaise sauce. My companions ate with gusto and declared satisfaction.

My Mayfield Hash was a feast.

It’s difficult to see from the photo, but underneath those eggs was a substantial portion of black pudding, potato and ham: big lumps of tender ham.

The eggs passed the ooze test …

… and although I would have been better off leaving it, I ate the nicely crisped toast. It was a filling plate of food. Tasty and enjoyable to eat.

We ordered more coffees to linger over, paid the bill and left. Including tip, it came to €20 each. Reasonable for a good brunch eaten in pleasant surroundings with decent company. Recommended.
